Dodgeball without tears

September 1, 2004

Yesterday was awesome. I'm still exhausted, but the thing about my exhaustion of late is it comes from working hard rather than thinking too much. Monday was hard, because I was in transit all day and was working hard. Yesterday was hard, but so fun. When I came home from work, some of my very favorite people were at my house with their children, and we all went over to the playground for our first playground game day with the kiddos.

I had printed out a SHEAF of games for Pansy to look at, and I actually never got around to reading it. The tome on dodgeball was the best. There was a whole section on "bleeding." Pansy wrote notes. I told her I am going to get her a whistle and a clipboard. She was all decked out in shorts and a tank and addidas shoes.

We went across the street to the playground, and the adults decided that the best strategy was to just start playing dodgeball ourselves, and see if the kids were interested. It worked! After we started throwing the ball around, having fun, the kids all wanted to join in. We played several games, and everyone had a blast. There were no tears and hurt feelings were only temporary. I think gym class would be a lot more fun if there were 4 or 5 caring adults around guiding the kids' behavior, you know?

I thought it was cute, because Monk had watched so many olympic events this year that every time his team scored, he would HUG his teammates. And we all cheered each other on and shook hands at the end of the game. We also played Red Rover and the kids had another pick up game of dodgeball. I think we hung out at the playground for a couple of hours, and we all had so much fun. There are a bunch of other homeschoolers who are wanting to join. I hope it doesn't ruin the dynamic of the games...we'll see.

It was really fun, but exhausting. And having R here with her kids is really fun, but also exhausting. There's always a baby to hold or a booboo to kiss or a cup to pour. And we are all learning to get along with each other. I love it. I have a feeling R and I are going to start acting like an old married couple before too long. In a good way.

I just had my last intermediate class at my temp job. Tomorrow is the last day of the beginner class. I'm looking forward to having a bit of a break in the morning, but I will miss my seniors. They are such wonderful folks. Even the cranky ones were fun in their way. I hope I get to teach the class again.

My brain is on auto-pilot right now, so that's about all I can write. I haven't had a spare moment to read blogs all week, although I have been listening to the news. I hope everyone is doing well...
