The Grateful 5

January 11, 2006

Despite the fact that I thought I felt like crap coming home from work today, I took my dog out for our nightly walk. I couldn't help it. She's so freaking cute, and she just stands there and stares at me until I give in.

Anyway, the walk cheered me immensely, both physically and mentally. Here are five things I found to be thankful for, in no particular order:

OK, that was probably more than five, and I have more besides, but I think I need to quit for the night and watch the rest of this Queer As Folk DVD. Ta!

Gratitude - Version Homoerotic Soldier Songs

October 30, 2005

Ten things I am grateful for this week (in no particular order):

  1. The Soldiering Life by the Decemberists* (and the sing-alongs it inspires)
  2. Sweet Dogs Learning New Stuff
  3. Dog Almighty
  4. "Happy Halloween" (transcript coming soon)
  5. Nice people to share Dog Almight with
  6. The 11-year old playdate (silence, and no kids in sight) (I'm assuming they are in the backyard)
  7. Partly Sunny, 77 degrees
  8. A period without cramps (and I finally got rid of the headache)
  9. Sunday
  10. Coley didn't scream and cry in childcare today, so I could listen to the whole service.

The Soldiering Life
by: The Decemberists

Ambling madly all over the town
The call to arms you liken to a whisper,
I liken to a radio.
You were a brick bat, a bowery tuff, so rough
They culled you from a cartoon
Pulled out of your pantaloons.

But you,
My brother in arms,
I'd rather I'd lose my limbs
Than let you come to harm.

But you ,
My bombazine doll,
The bullets may singe your skin
And the mortars may fall.

But I,
I never felt so much life
Than tonight
Huddled in the trenches,
Gazing on the battle field,
Our rifles blaze away;
We blaze away.

Corporal Bradley of regiment five
In proud array standing by the bathing
Soldiers and the stevedores.
We laid on the mattress and tumbled to sleep
Our eyes aligned, swaddled in our civies
Cradled in our dungarees.

But you,
My brother in arms,
I'd rather I'd lose my limbs
Than let you come to harm.

But you,
My bombazine doll,
The bullets may singe your skin
And the mortars may fall.

But I,
I never felt so much life
Than tonight
Huddled in the trenches,
Gazing on the battle field
Our rifles blaze away;
We blaze away.
We blaze away.
We blaze away.

Friday Random Ten - Version: Just broke up with my girlfriend

October 14, 2005

Linking up Jill's list this time:

  1. The Smoking Popes - Just Broke up with my Girlfriend
  2. Violent Femmes "Give me the Car"
  3. A Tribe Called Quest - Da Booty
  4. The Clash - Tommy Gun
  5. REM - Drive
  6. They Might Be Giants - Hello Radio
  7. Rites of Spring - By Design
  8. Erykah Badu - Love of My Life
  9. X-Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescents
  10. Pixies - Head On (Jesus and Mary Chain Cover)

bonus Track:

"By Design"
By Rites of Spring

Time heals all wounds they say
But the self inflicted won't just fade away
And in these shifting tides of blame
why are you suprised to see your name? It's such a drag
Time got the best of you
Things you gave you say were taken
Explaination piled over excuse

And so the story goes
But by your own design
And if you look to me to find you
Then my eyes will pass right though

Believe me I had wished
We could have avoided this
Please dont ask me to explain
All the things that caused your pain
I only want you to realize
Passivity equals compliance
Let it slip right through your hands
Become the victims of other's demands

And so the story goes
But by your own design
And if you look to me to find you
Then my eyes will pass right though
Pass right through

Gratitude

October 3, 2005

I keep forgetting about my gratitude lists. Here are ten things I am grateful for right now:

  1. Good musicians (Nick Cave & Decemberists are topping my list right now)
  2. Mulligatawny (it's fucking delicious)
  3. My kids' therapist
  4. The Family Allison
  5. Coffee with bloggers
  6. cilantro (particularly that which is in the mulligatawny)
  7. Musicians (again) (particularly those who can pull off writing operatic masterpieces about vengeance in the belly of a whale that totally make me laugh out loud out of sheer delight.)(As well as those who can write songs that sound almost Neil Diamondish, until you listen to the lyrics and hear the words "cannibal" and "abbatoir" and "orifice" (in reference to the orifice of Orpheus)and variations thereof.)
  8. Monk's hyperactive dance to "The Sporting Life."
  9. Coley's toy gun made entirely out of plastic marble run pieces.
  10. Mileage reimbursement checks.

Seven Things Meme

September 25, 2005

I've been tagged by Cleis...this is the hardest meme ever:

Seven things I plan to do before I die:

  1. Raise two sensitive, strong, intelligent, considerate boys into men.
  2. Write at least one novel
  3. Hike either the Appalachian Trail or the Continental Divide Trail
  4. Go live by myself in a cabin in a remote area for at least a month. Well, with my dog.
  5. Travel cross-country with the kiddos and write a book about it.
  6. Travel overseas with the kiddos and write a book about it.
  7. Do both of the above by myself and write a book about it.

Seven things I can do:

  1. Make a mean pot of soup
  2. Teach a classroom full of adults from various backgrounds and with a wide array of abilities how to use a computer
  3. Drive for 12+ hours, only stopping for gas
  4. Give birth without any pain relief
  5. Win countless games of dodge ball against 4 7-9 year olds
  6. Drive cross-country without ever getting lost
  7. Gosh, this is the hardest one of all...um...OH! I can also get totally lost in a public park in the middle of the fucking city!

Seven things I can't do:

  1. Play any sort of musical instrument
  2. Arrive late with any grace at all
  3. Play poker
  4. Sit still
  5. Keep my house clean
  6. Tan
  7. Build a house of cards

Seven things that attract me to people of the opposite (and same) sex:

  1. Self-awareness (including the ability to laugh at oneself)
  2. Stability
  3. Humor
  4. Tenacity
  5. Patience (which is totally hypocritical, because I have almost none)
  6. A willingness to change and grow
  7. Freckles and/or goofy glasses (which might just be the after-effect of last night's show)

Seven things I say the most:

  1. "fuck" "fucking" "fucked" etc
  2. "alrighty, kiddos!"
  3. Various lyrics from Decemberists songs
  4. "right"
  5. "Oh, Lordy"
  6. "You guys, Come ON, now!"
  7. "I'm all done talking about poop now. Find something else to talk about, please."

Seven celebrity crushes:

  1. Noam Chomsky
  2. Ralph Nader
  3. Howard Zinn
  4. Colin Meloy
  5. Brian Kinney (yes, the fictional character)
  6. Melora Krieger from Rasputina
  7. Nick Cave
  8. (bonus Crush) Bill Moyers

Seven crush-worthy bloggers (I'm going to stick with strictly people who are not currently on my blogroll):

  1. Well, Cleis, of course
  2. Echidne
  3. Amanda
  4. Norbizness
  5. Bitch Ph.D.
  6. Shaula
  7. Lauren
+ all of the people I have crushed on before on my blog.

Consider yourself tagged if you're crush-worthy. (The list isn't exhaustive, obviously, so if you know you're crushy-worthy, too, go for it.)

Oh My God
Spearhead

(chorus)
Oh-my, oh-my God!
out here mama they got us livin' suicide
singin' oh-my, oh-my God!
out here mama they got us livin' genocide

Slam bam I come unseen
but like gasoline you can tell I'm in the tank
like money in the bank
I smell appealing, but I'm toxic, can send ya reeling
without an inklin', keep ya thinkin'
'cause you gave cash to the feds, left your school district for dead
fucked you up in the head, but still they sayin' nothin's wrong
sellin' firewater but outlawing the bong
still believing the system is workin'
while half of my people are still outta workin'
anonymous notes left in the pockets and coats
of judges and juries from 'Frisco to Jersey
threats and protests politicians mob debts
trumped up charges and phoney arrests
stage a lethal injection, the night before the election
'cause he got donations from the prison guard's union
(chorus)

Listen in to my stethoscope on a rope
international lullabies, human cries
thumps and silence, the language of violence
algorithmic, cataclysmic, seismic, biorhythmic
you can make a life longer, but you can't save it
you can make a clone an then you try to enslave it?
stealin' DNA samples from the onborn
and then you comin' after us
'cause we sampled a James Brown horn?
scientists who's God is progress
a four-headed sheep is their latest project
the CIA runnin' like that Jones from Indiana
but they still won't talk about that (Jim) Jones
(People's Temple mass suicide) in Guyana
This ain't no cartoon
no one slips on bananas
do you really think that that car killed Diana
hell I shot Ronald Reagan, I shot JFK,
I slept with Marilyn (Monroe) she sung me happy birthday
singin'
(chorus)

Well politicians got lipstick on the collar
the whole media started to holler
but I don't give a fuck who they screwin' in private
I wanna know who they screwin' in public
robbin', cheatin', stealin'
white collar criminal
McDonald eatin', you deserve a beatin'
send you home a weepin', with a fat bill for your
Caribbean weekend
for just about anything they can bust us
false advertising sayin' "halls of Justice''
you tellin' the youth don't be so violent
then you drop bombs on every single continent
mandatory minimum sentencin'
'cause he got caught with a pocket fulla medicine
do that again another ten up in the pen
I feel so mad I wanna bomb an institution
singin'
(chorus)

  • m: the citizens are restless L: do you know what a citizen is, m? m: Yeah, dad...they're the residents of a city (!)
  • flea-free twyla
  • celebrating mother's day on the kids' birthdays instead of some arbitrary day in midmay
