MSNBC - Alabama vote opens old racial wounds
Black students in Alabama have struggled on some national tests, with 73 percent of black eighth-graders rated below basic competency in math, compared with 32 percent of white eighth-graders. Killings also frets about Alabama schools -- just as schools in many other parts of the country -- steadfastly resegregating. This phenomenon, which is getting increased attention among national education experts, is attributed to a kaleidoscope of factors, including the suburban migration of white families, private school expansion and the rising popularity of home schooling among white conservatives.
Remember that the privilege that allows you to homeschool comes at a cost to others.
Also, what the FUCK? Nice "moral values," Alabama.

The tax issue is totally *not* seperate from the racism issue in Alabama. The bulk of wealth in the state is in the hands of white people. And the "nice" white folks don't want taxes raised to help the poor, because they can well afford to send their kids to hoighty-toighty private schools. And they would send their kids to the hoighty-toighty schools *regardless* of higher taxes, because bottom line: they don't want their white kids hanging out with black kids.
And really, it isn't just the white upper class that pulls that shit. The white middle class sends their kids to private schools, too. Homeschooling was more popular in the lower-economic classes than upper.
Fucked up shit in Alabama, and yet whenever I call some one on it, I get read the riot act for clinging to stereotypes about the Old South, and I'm just not giving the place a chance. *rolls eyes*
Oh, and my comment is regarding the article, not your words. I don't think I made that very clear in my comment. :)
